What's a Money Piece?

You’ve probably seen this highlighting style, but weren’t aware of its name. The money piece, a.k.a. face-framing hair color, is a technique that’s more popular than ever. It allows your hair to help define your facial features. This trending look is achieved by balayaging the front few strands with a different color than the rest of your hair. We love the look of a lived in money piece (see pics throughout) but if you want to go bold, you can opt for a chunky one.

This is not a DIY project.

If you want to add a money piece to your hair, it’s best to head to the salon. Your colorist knows just where to place your face-framing highlights as well as how to blend them properly with the rest of your hair. They will tailor the color and depth of your highlights depending on how bold you want the money piece to be. The closer the shade matches the rest of your hair, the more subtle they will be and vice versa.

Be sure to use color safe shampoo and conditioner on your hair and money piece. This technique usually involves lightening your hair so it’s a good idea to add in a purple shampoo to avoid brassiness.

As always, consult with your stylist on what’s best for your specific hair maintenance commitment and hair goals!
