revive guide: Hair After Having A Baby

Of all the things new Moms have to worry about, the least of your worries should be new hair problems. Unfortunately, postpartum hair loss and texture changes are incredibly common following the birth of your child.

Hair shedding usually begins around 3-4 months and lasts throughout the first year after giving birth. Hormones are still adjusting which can also cause unwanted texture changes and an oily scalp.

To help get you through those rough times we’ve put together a list of the most helpful tips and information surrounding postpartum hair. Talk to your stylist if you are experiencing problems with postpartum hair or have suggestions we might have missed!

Choose Your Products Wisely

A simple hair routine is crucial for new Moms. With the little time you have for yourself you’ll need products that work effectively. We suggest a thickening shampoo/conditioner, pomade stick to tame flyaways, and a dry shampoo/dry cleansing conditioner to give your hair a clean look between washes.

Use The Right Accessories

Claw clips, hats and scrunchies will be your new best friends. While it’s tempting to wear headbands all the time to cover up the baby hairs, this is so counterproductive. A tight headband rubbing against that delicate hair and scalp is actually causing more breakage and prolonging the time it will take for regrowth to happen. If you must wear at headband be sure it is a comfortable fit that isn’t tugging at the hairline.

Keep Taking Your Prenatal Vitamins

Get the right nutrients. During those postpartum months your body needs some extra support and nourishment as you replenish your nutrition stores. Keep your hair healthy by eating well and continuing to take your prenatal vitamin.

Focus On Your Scalp

The health of your scalp directly effects the health of your hair. We’ve talked about this before on the rundown and it’s crucial for stimulating regrowth of shedding hair and broken baby hairs postpartum. Applying Castor Oil directly to your scalp where needed is a favorite tip of ours for regrowth. If you are struggling with an oily/waxy scalp try a diluted apple cider vinegar rinse before regular shampooing.

Wait It Out!

Nothing is a sure fix for hair shedding and changing texture, but through experiencing it ourselves and talking to clients we know one thing IS for sure: it just takes time. Be patient. There are many temptations for quick fixes and cover ups to the problem. However, it’s most important to keep in perspective that you’ve brought LIFE into this world. Healing your hair (and body) will take time.
