Jennifer Green, owner of East Eagle Yoga, will walk us through the many benefits of practicing yoga. She will also bust some myths about Yoga that are simply untrue.

Why did you become a Yoga instructor?

I was always drawn to Yoga as a young college student as a way to calm the mind, stretch the body, and to take a pause from the business of daily life. As an adult, my love for the practice of Yoga grew and as such, I wanted to learn more and deepen my practice. I took the 200 hour RYT teacher training program at East Eagle Yoga and went from a back row student, which I loved and still learn from today, to teaching and being able to share this joyful part of life from the front of the room. Teaching and loving the EEY Yoga community led to eventual ownership of East Eagle Yoga, going on to earn my 500 hour and advanced Yoga credentials, to teaching Yoga at Temple University, to traveling to present Yoga workshops, leading Yoga clubs at Elementary schools, and leading the 200 hour Teacher Training Program at East Eagle Yoga.

Myth #1: You need to be flexible to do Yoga. NOT AT ALL, Yoga helps one become more flexible and more balanced in all areas of life. I equate starting Yoga for the first time is like walking in as if you were the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz, then little by little you are stretching the body and then it becomes more flexible.

Myth #2: Yoga is expensive. NOT AT ALL, we provide a loaner Yoga mat here at East Eagle Yoga for anyone coming in and mats can be purchased for as little as $5 at Five Below and, besides that all you need is your breath. We offer new student special at East Eagle Yoga 3 classes for $25 and then have class packages after that in which a discount is given with the more classes you purchase.

Myth #3: Yoga is only for thin women. NOT AT ALL, Yoga is for ALL humans, humans of all sizes, colors, shapes, ages and ability levels. All are Welcomed Always.

Myth #4: Yoga is religious.Hopefully one finds Yoga to be a SPIRITUAL practice in addition to a physical practice but it is not religious. We have all denominations and people with diverse religious backgrounds practicing at East Eagle Yoga.

What are the benefits of practicing Yoga?

There are so many invaluable physical benefits to practicing Yoga but it is the calming of the busy mind that is the biggest benefit. It is extremely beneficial to take time to come to the mat and practice stillness and a slowing down of the breath so that the mind can have the opportunity to focus on just one thing. Yoga can aid in lowering symptoms of anxiety, depression, blood pressure, insomnia, ect. Yoga can also help with balance, coordination, and building strength, so the benefits are truly endless.

What makes East Eagle Yoga different?

What sets East Eagle Yoga apart from any other yoga studio is first that they are one of the longest standing, if not the longest standing, Yoga studio in the Delaware County and Philadelphia area. They are a classical Hatha Yoga studio and classes are a full 75 minutes. EEY has the most welcoming, non-judgemental, and eclectic community as well as a warm and relaxing aesthetic. In addition to Yoga class 365 days a year, they host numerous events and monthly pop up classes of varying types such as Restorative and Reiki Yoga, the popular Full Moon Goddess Circles, and a First Friday of the month Candlelight Yoga.

What are the best poses to do everyday?

“Two of my favortie poses that I do every day are Child's pose to get myself centered and grounded for the day and Half Moon Pose as this pose opens up my hips and stretches the spine more than any other pose for me.”

What’s it like being a business owner?

One of the best parts about being a business owner is making connections with the community. East Eagle Yoga is located in the vibrant heart of Havertown with a lot of exciting businesses as our neighbors and being able to spread the Yoga love into our community, whether that is offering free Yoga in the park, being involved in local fundraisers and events, or traveling to someone's home to give them a private Yoga class, is by far the best part of owning East Eagle Yoga.

Just as amazing is hearing from a student that Yoga has made a positive difference in their life. This makes everything I do worth it.

The worst and most unexpected part of owning a business was trying to continue bringing our Yoga classes to our community during the global pandemic of Covid. This unexpected challenge, although extremely difficult at times, made me a stronger business owner and a more creative Yoga instructor and for that I am grateful.

Where do you find inspiration?

“I can be inspired by anything and everything. I have been inspired by artwork on the side of a building, the line in a song or a poem, the look on someone's face, a selfless act of kindness by someone, the students that I teach for sure, the love of my family, the falling snow, the ocean, the sun , the moon, the stars, the beauty all around us. My inspiration comes from anyone or anything at any time.”
