Healthy Hair Habits To Practice This Year

Let’s go over some common hair mistakes, why they can be damaging to your hair and how to fix them.

Incorporate these nuggets of wisdom into your routine and 2023 will be your best hair year yet.

Never sleep with wet hair

When your hair is wet, it’s the most vulnerable. Wet hair is weak, the moisture causes hair fibers to stretch making it more prone to snapping and breakage - especially when it’s rubbing against your pillow.

Distribute oil from your roots

Brushing your hair regularly will help distribute natural oils throughout your hair and help with dry ends. This process naturally strengthens hair and increases shine.

Invest in a silk pillow case

Silk is naturally softer than other fabrics. A silk pillowcase minimizes friction as you toss and turn resulting in reduced frizz and less breakage.

Deep condition after color appointments

Coloring opens up the hair cuticles and we must close them back down. A deep conditioning treatment is recommended after color appointments to lock in color, add moisture and help prevent chemical damage.

Use scrunchies or claw clips instead of hair ties

Hair ties cause hair damage and breakage, especially during the detangling process when you take them out. Scrunchies and claw clips are much more forgiving which prevents breakage and is less damaging to your hair strands.

Never sleep with your hair up

Tying your hair up then sleeping on it can cause loose hair to tangle. This creates tension on the hair strands leading to potential hair loss. It’s best to sleep with it down, in a loose braid or ponytail lightly secured with a scrunchie.

Turn the heat down on your irons

Your irons do not need to be on the highest setting to curl or straighten properly. Using these tools on 420 degrees literally cooks your hair causing breakage and fraying. Start on a lower setting, gradually building up to see what temperature works best for your hair.

Let hair air dry before blowing dry

Your hair should be 50% dry when you begin blow drying with a brush. Get as much moisture out as you can with a towel, and let your hair air-dry for 10-15 minutes after you towel-dry. This will minimize frizz as well as heat damage. Letting your hair dry a bit before you blow dry is also a great way to reduce the amount of time the actual blow drying takes.
